As an example of the breadth of support he had, although a nomination only requires two signatures, John was nominated by nine people, including rangeland professionals, UC Rangeland professors, and both state and federal agency staff. He was recognized in part for a regional collaboration between multiple agencies and nonprofits aimed at reducing fire hazard and restoring habitat on two California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) Reserves in San Diego County, something that took years in the making. A former Chapter President of San Diego-Imperial County Cattlemen’s Association, he has long advocated the benefits of working with the conserved lands community to promote grazing on public lands.
